MILAN FASHION WEEK: Gucci’s Gothic Romance

The Gucci Fall 2012 collection was a hauntingly beautiful display of rich luxurious plums and emeralds, intertwined with tones of onyx, petroleum and slate. The dramatic show was a dark display of gothic romance with underlying elements of strength and glamour brought to life through deep burgundy lips, long velvet drapery and sheaths of black liquid sheerness. The midnight hues transcended into looks of metallic sheen and iridescent darkness while the emphasis on oversized menswear, a standout exaggerated fur coat and head to toe oil-slicked peacock feathers, made sure the message of confidence was received.

LONDON FASHION WEEK: Burberry’s Town and Field

The Burberry Prorsum Fall collection was the epitome of, ‘London Cool,’ encapsulating two crucial elements, so significant to Christopher Bailey’s concept, he entitled the show in their honour, ‘Town and Field.’
Vintage inspired designs, with echoes of ‘30s and ‘40s influence, captured a nostalgia for proper English elegance, portrayed through the incorporation of delicate umbrellas, hosiery and ankle boots, berets and corduroy. On the other end of the scale, integrated fluently, was the playful representation of field, which was brought to life through quirky motifs of bow belts, owl printed knits and peplum, adding the fun and frivolity of casual, youth inspired effortlessness.

LONDON FASHION WEEK: McQ’s Unconventional Accessibility

From the beautiful russet tones of the, ‘fallen autumn leaves,’ which adorned the runway, to the miliary inspired strength and tulle induced frivolity, the McQ Fall collection was an exquisite vision of accessible luxury. Ideals of fabulousness were portrayed with nonchalant attitude as appliquéd flower arrangements embedded on an array of tulle worked seamlessly with deep tones of burgundy, leather and gothic black lace. Without removing the core essence of dark romanticism, haunting beauty and dramatic concepts, Sarah Burton was able to create an aesthetic of boundary pushing approachability, while continuing to encapsulate the rich heritage and innovation of the brand. As the last model transcended into what appeared to be a woodshed, but was later identified as: ‘the Core Club,’ the direction of McQ’s future was confirmed, a portrayal of hyper-luxury, intense drama and unconventional theories, set amidst distinct elements of beautiful accessibility on a gritty raving dance floor.
