The music world lost an absolutely incredible, undoubtedly irreplaceable icon in 2011, however, it seems the tragic loss of the one and only Amy Winehouse, was in fact fashion’s gain, as her always imaginative, provocatively off- beat style became the inspiration behind the Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2012 Haute Couture collection.
In an ultimate tribute to the beehive and drawing hauntingly direct connotations to the late songstress who gave the hairstyle its modern attitude, the Jean Paul Gaultier collection commanded not only attention, but more importantly awe, wonderment, a sense of connection and emotion.
The combination of contradicting textures, which incorporated the likes of lace, sheer, velvet and vinyl, dishevelled veil motif and array of candy-coloured wigs and stockings, captured an essence of rebellion, giving a some what, ‘undone,’ aesthetic to the otherwise intricate composure of couture.
The collection, just like the star who inspired it, depicted a sense of dark, troubled beauty, compelling the audience to become a part of its tarnished purity, combining horror with genius in such a creative way that the distinction or separation between the two became unimaginable.
Through his couture collection, Jean Paul Gaultier encapsulated a hidden, but truly powerful beauty, amidst a heartbreaking tail of tragedy.
