An Idea, Not A Reality

Always the illusionist, Karl Lagerfeld once again strategically cultivated and created the perfect atmosphere to work along side and enhance the impact of his Fall Couture collection. Transporting his audience effortlessly from the Grand Palais to an ancient theatre covered in ruins and ashen with dust, Lagerfeld set the tone for his always elaborate vision and distinctly cemented the underlying ideal of the collection- the need for couture to resonate past the red carpet and relate on a more attainable level.
‘The Old World and the New World,’ was a couture collection of gradual, beautiful incline. Accelerating from the dust on the seats and the falling debris, to the array of intricate prints and layers of textures standing for and representing the grandeur of couture in a less than ordinary approach, challenging the expected and saluting the unconventional. Slowly moving from tweeds with, as Lagerfeld referred to them, ‘the sparkle of stardust,’ into full-blown silver sheaths of magnificence, the collection was based upon foundations of underlying, unexpected glamour. The fabrics were laced with sheen and the patterns adorned with mirrored mosaics, while thick black belts were strewn around the waistlines of iridescent gowns. By highlighting the juxtaposition between the old and the new and drawing on the past to create a vision of the future, Lagerfeld made yet another, ‘new,’ idea fit the legendary mould of Chanel’s beginnings.

“Chanel is an idea, not a reality”- Karl Lagerfeld.

click.

Everything has already been decided. Nothing’s left to chance and there are no moments of organic emotion or feelings caught off guard. We’re scrolling through our digital lives, mind numbingly double tapping things that sort of, not really, but maybe just a little bit grab our attention. Uploading representations of our own watered-down documentations, we’re not capturing emotions any more; we’re forcing an illusion based on the fragments of a moment’s memory.
Where has all the beauty gone? Those raw candid shots, the un-planned, un posed and un-captioned experiences that burn right through to the microscope of people’s souls, their un-edited sense of being.
Sometimes it’s nice to immerse yourself in the creases created from a smile as a face scrunches up in the most perfectly blissful way, laughing and completely unaware of the awe they have just created. A hand, covering the secrets that the eyes guard and the cheeks are only too happy to reveal, or the pure, harmonious aura of someone staring uncomplicatedly into the eyes of their lover, capturing the creation as theirs souls intertwine.
Click to create, don't sell it short.

Cigarettes and Fireflies

Light.
One foot after the other.
Don’t speak, fly.
Feel the beat of your love.
The open deserted air of the black night sky,
As the stars whisper to your soul.
Faded memories capturing moments of bliss, burnt onto your being,
Entwined into your beautifully chaotic mind.
Pulling you into the hysteria, screaming peacefully, floating frantically,
To a clouded sense of naïve reality.
Into dust all black every day.

Once Upon A Time: By Karl Lagerfeld

A rare escape into what is imagined by Karl Lagerfeld to represent the very beginnings of Chanel’s evolution is beautifully depicted in his recent return to the director’s chair for the creation of ‘Once Upon A Time’. If anyone could portray the streets of Paris in 1913 through the hungry eyes of Coco Chanel, it would be the one creative mind who’s managed to continue and uphold the legacy, vision and forward thinking dramatics of a brand created 100 years ago. A simplistic but beautifully executed recount of Chanel’s first day in the fashion industry, the film portrays an essence of extravagance, opulence and an somewhat ease of style, an era where the fashion was more organic, style was savored and the pace was slower but ever more elaborate. It depicts Chanel’s forward thinking innovation where doubt is quickly knocked down by triumph, bringing her ideas of “new” and scene causing style to the forefront. It’s the evolution of the boundary pushers and the reinstatement of Chanel’s never-wavering resonance in fashion and modernity.
